Buying Advice

Choosing a second handpan — same scale or different?

My D Kurd has been my companion for 2 years and I'm ready for a second instrument. Should I go for a completely different scale (like a major or exotic scale) or a complementary one in the same key? What did you all choose for your second pan?

Go different! My first was D Kurd, second is E Sabye (major). Having one minor and one major gives you completely different emotional palettes. It's like having two different instruments.

I went with a complementary scale in the same key — D Amara alongside my D Kurd. They play beautifully together and I can switch between them in a session for variety while staying in the same tonal world.

Get something you can't do with your first pan. If you have a 9-note, maybe try a mutant with bottom notes. If you have nitrided, try stainless. Expand your experience.
